Gun violence in the city of Seattle is more than just a matter of crime and safety—it is a symptom of multiple systemic breakdowns, and it’s getting worse. Shots fired within the city are now higher than anytime within the last five years. Here are five things we can do here in Seattle to reduce gun violence:

  • Promote “Gun Free Zones” for all private businesses

  • Commit to a public health outreach effort to encourage parents to ASK their neighbors where their children play if they have a  gun in the home

  • Promote a separate public health campaign to encourage safe storage of firearms

  • Support Washington Ceasefire’s national efforts to promote availability and adoption of childproof Smart Guns with federal and state law enforcement agencies

  • Proactively encourage Seattle area state legislators to push for reasonable common sense gun safety legislation such as toughening the requirement for obtaining a concealed weapons permit
